Why do Pittsburgh area women earn 25 cents less for every dollar earned by men working the same jobs?

To address this issue, I created Claim Change, a grassroots campaign to inform and empower young people on issues related to gender equality and the wage gap. Funded by a grant from the Women and Girls Foundation of Southwest Pennsylvania, this project is currently implemented on college campuses across the Pittsburgh area.

To launch the campaign, four installation kiosks are placed in student centers and libraries of local universities. These kiosks, designed to initiate conversations around the issues, display messages about the gender wage gap and the Paycheck Fairness Act. People are encouraged to drop in their spare change to fill up the structure and make a statement.

Take action by signing your name to a postcard addressed to your senator, demanding support of the Paycheck Fairness Act. After tearing off and dropping the card in the kiosk, a small card remains encouraging a visit to www.claimchange.org.

Other print materials for the campaign include small cut-and-fold change boxes for individuals and small businesses to display with the goal of collecting more change. Unexpected ads are placed in school newspapers to further spread the word.
