If you could be any bird, what would you be, and why? By asking this question to museum visitors, we discovered that people gain interest in birds when they can relate bird behaviors to their own personal experiences. Designing an exhibit proposal for Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Natural History, our challenge was to reveal the museum’s vast collection of bird research and attract local college students.

CMNH Research

Our design process began with many rounds of prototyping and improvised storytelling. Our collaborative group included two industrial designers, and our small group rapidly developed storyboard concepts into interactive experiences.

CMNH Process

As visitors enter the exhibit, they take the “What Kind of Bird are You?” personality test. Each visitor is banded with a uniquely assigned bird type. This section replicates the museum’s bird banding facilities. Next, the visitors travel through several sections highlighting aspects of bird behavior. Visitors are encouraged to compare their own behaviors to those of their feathered friends.

CMNH Exhibit Flow

To document our process and communicate design specs to the museum staff, I designed a process book and exhibit poster.
